Understanding the Math Behind Tile Pricing: Don’t Get Caught OffGuard!

As a homeowner or builder, have you ever been quoted a price for tiles in square feet, only to be billed in box rates? It’s a common practice in India,
but it’s essential to ensure that the box rate charged is in line with the committed square foot rate.

To avoid any discrepancies, you need to know the coverage of tiles per box.
Let’s break it down with an example:

Assume a 60x60cm (2ftx2ft) tile box contains 4 tiles. To calculate the
coverage:
Coverage per box = Length of tile (in meters) x Breadth of tile (in meters) x
Number of tiles per box.

In this example:
Tile size = 60cm = 0.6m
Number of tiles per box = 4
Coverage per box = 0.6m x 0.6m x 4 = 1.44 SQ meters
(or)
Coverage per box in Sq ft = 1.44 x 10.764 (1 sqm = 10.76 sq ft) = 15.5 Sqft.
Now, if a seller quotes a rate of ₹50/sq ft, the box rate should be:
₹50/sq ft x 15.5 (coverage/box) = ₹775.00/box …..(a)
However, some sellers might calculate the box rate differently:
2 ft x 2 ft x 4 tiles = 16 sq ft
Rate per box = 16 x ₹50/sq ft = ₹800.00/box …..(b)

Notice the difference? Method (b) would have you paying 3.2% more than the actual amount!

To avoid such discrepancies, it’s crucial to understand the math behind tile pricing. Always verify the coverage per box and calculate the box rate accordingly.

Stay vigilant, and don’t let mathematical manipulation catch you off guard! What are your thoughts on this topic? Share your experiences or questions in the comments below!
